Kenya Mutero Estate

Mutero Estate is a small, family-owned coffee farm located in Kirinyaga County, about 100 kilometers north of Nairobi. The farm is managed by Alvans Mutero, who took over from his father, a coffee farmer since 1959. Over time, the estate has grown from 4,000 to 9,000 coffee trees, primarily of the renowned SL28 variety – known for its vibrant acidity and complex cup profile.

Alvans has made significant investments in on-site processing infrastructure, including a pulping station, fermentation tanks, and washing channels. This vertical integration gives him full control over quality. After a 24-hour fermentation, the coffee is washed and then dried slowly for 10–14 days on raised African beds to ensure consistent airflow and even drying.

Mutero Estate is also part of the innovative Nyamindi Project, in collaboration with Trabocca and Wageningen University. The project explores advanced fermentation techniques and DNA sequencing to further enhance cup quality and deepen traceability.

Sustainability plays a key role in day-to-day operations. Alvans uses compost made from coffee pulp and animal manure as a natural fertilizer – reducing reliance on synthetic inputs and promoting soil health.

Coffees from Mutero Estate are prized for their lively acidity and layered flavor profile, often featuring notes of lemon, praline, plum, and warming spices like caraway. The mouthfeel is creamy and the body well-balanced, making it an outstanding choice for filter brewing.
